We all don't mind as long as we're the lucky ones but the reality is the economy and society is better off with a substantial middle class. Manufacturing has established and maintained a solid middle class. Software and knowlage based industries employ far less people.
The US and Canada makes aircraft, engines, turbines, and all sorts of things so it's in our best national interest that we can make our own wind turbines. That's an investment a leader would make.
I didn't realize lawyers, real estate agents, accountants, nurses, pharmacists, consultants, teachers, sales reps and the like weren't middle class. The only difference is that the middle class of the future will need some education to do their job. The days of guys with high school diploams making $60,000 at the local plant at history.
A quick scan of the Government of Canada Job bank shows there are tons of good paying jobs available in Edmonton (even in this poor economy), with management jobs in a variety of industries ranging from about $35,000 per year (food service) to $90,000 (farm manager). If that isn't middle class, then I don't know what is.
