According to NPR, “In 2003, a survey of female veterans found that 30 percent said they were raped in the military. A 2004 study of veterans who were seeking help for post-traumatic stress disorder found that 71 percent of the women said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving. And a 1995 study of female veterans of the Gulf and earlier wars, found that 90 percent had been sexually harassed.”
Interesting that while I was an MP at Ft. Hood Texas from 98-91 I dealt with 1 rape case and 2 attempted rapes while at Ft. Hood and one while deployed to Panama. None of victims were soldiers. I would like to see how the numbers were compiled by the NPR. They have a very anti military reputation and I would not find it odd if the numbers are hard to verify.
Rape numbers are always hard to verify. Brock has said that 90% of rape allegations are bullshit, but that 90% of rapes are not reported. But that 30% of women were raped sounds very high to me. Still look at our RCMP - many women coming forward now to say they were sexually harassed and nothing was done when they did complain. Wouldn't doubt that the pressure to take one for the team is even stronger in the military.
I have to admit, although I've dealt with some harassment and bigotry, I've only dealt one rape, and that was a sailor being raped by a civilian (which we didn't catch)
The military folk I deal with seem to be a bit more liberal.
