BRAH BRAH:
Maybe the next Defence Minister should be an ex Military General who understands the needs of Military personal when deployed, of course that's easier said than done.

Generals are often politicians in uniforms.

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker:
Boy, I've supported them in the past but this current government is folding like a pair of deuces on all matters of Defence, now that the troops are home from Afghanistan. They're sure losing me fast. I don't like to be manipulated, so.

Let me tell you something (I see you have a Montreal Canadiens logo near your avatar):I hate the HABS with a passion that runs deep. I feel it in my bone marrow. I feel it in every cell of my being and in every iota of my consciousness. If I had a choice of this government being elected again or Montreal winning the Stanley Cup I would have to wave a flag with the big red toilet seat on it.

I was against the Conservatives because I didn't believe Harper (didn't believe anything that he said really), but when they were elected I said "ok...the most people voted for them so I have to give them a chance and maybe those other voters were right". I didn't like Martin but I voted for him because he had done enough things right. Even with ADSCAM and the fallout, I felt that "they all steal" and it was wrong but that they still did enough things right.

This government has outspent, outstolen, outsold(SOLD OUT), out lied, out condescended, out broken promised, out everything'd everyone ever on all of the negative stuff.

Oh well...but at least we will have income splitting and people won't be able to vouch for people at the polls. Good going Steve.

All I can say is that I am proud to have voted against this idiot in every election that he has ever been involved in when I had the right to vote.

They don't always make it to the top because of their fightin' abilities. It is a civil service job like any other and one's ability to navigate upward through the bureaucracy doesn't necessarily make one a brilliant leader.

(Do take your meds, though)

Further on Peter MacKay's Minister of Defence showmanship: when my Grandfather was alive and in a long-term care home more than an hour's drive (in good weather) from his home, my father contacted Peter MacKay's office to see if there was anything that could be done to move him closer to his home so that his wife could visit him on a regular basis.

My Grandfather was in the first wave to hit the beaches on D-Day and left the battlefield in late July with 19 bullet holes in his body.

Mr MacKay's office would not even meet with my father.

... and that is a disgrace. If you read back, you will see how disappointed I am with said minister and government, as well. Its a democracy ... of sorts.

My Dad was an overseas veteran, as well (RCAF Pilot) who was not wounded but was riddled with tropical diseases from his service. VA actually treated him very well and he received quite a bit of assistance at the end of his life.

It should never be a question when it comes to the people whom we owe. For the people who fought in a conflict that put our freedom at risk, they should have never lacked.

I believe that my grandfather had decent treatment most of his life but when he was in his final years, in his nineties, the issue was that he should be able to be close enough to his wife (who was also in her nineties) to make visitation with as little hardship as possible.

To not even have the respect to honour his sacrifices to the degree of hearing someone speak on his behalf is an absolute disgrace.

Were any of your concerns addressed by the Liberals when they were in power? Not starting a fight or anything but there's not much evidence to suggest that Liberals have given a shit about active service personnel or veterans since Lester Pearson was in power. Yeah, the Tories have been bad on this file. History in this country suggests that the Liberals, ever since their drift leftwards since the Trudeau era, were significantly worse on any military related issue.

I think the only diff is that the Libs wouldn't have played the patriotic, we support the troops card to nearly the same extent.

They were quite open about their indifference to National Defence. Cretien and Trudeau sure were, anyway.

Seem to remember the compassionate party not giving a rat's ass that military families were having to rely on food banks to get by

The contact was not made to Ottawa. The contact was made to Peter MacKay's office because he was in power - the Conservatives have won that riding every time except once since WWII. It's the one that Elmer MacKay stepped aside to vacate for Mulroney so good ol' Brian could get a seat then shuffle off to Ottawa after his campaign of "Jobs, jobs, jobs". My parents live, and my grandfather was in MacKay's riding at the time.

The truth of the matter is that after getting nowhere with MacKay, my father went to the office of, and spoke to the local NDP guy. He told him that he was going to contact Darrell Dexter regarding the matter and a couple of days later, my grandfather was moved back 10 minutes from his home. We figure that Darrell Dexter got it done so that was a extra feather in his cap when we all voted for him in the next provincial election. He was premier for one term. Dexter couldn't run the province but he was able to exert some influence and do a fine deed at the time.
