In Europe ?

Not bloody likely.

$1:
he will subjected to compulsory psychiatric care instead of imprisonment.

If he would have been found psychotic. Which he wasn't by the second report.

I don't know exactly how it works in Norway, but in The Netherlands, one can be held till the day they die in a psych ward. "Life in prison" is usually 25 years, I read that in Norway, it is 21 years. 1/3 time off for "good behaviour", and he will be out in 14.

Norway is similar. Unless they change sentencing laws, the killer will likely be a free middle-aged man around 20 years from now.

I never thought he was insane. Good ruling by the Norwegians on this.

Except as Brenda points out, he will probably get out of jail sooner this way. I do believe that in Norway the govt can apply to keep somebody longer than 21 years - ie dangerous offender status. I doubt they will just release him after 14 or even 21 years.

$1:
Norway has abolished life imprisonment, but retains other forms of indefinite imprisonment

Andy, it is rather ironic that the very system that Breivik attacked is going to demonstrate what he hates about it by being lenient to him.

That's disturbing but what's even more disgusting is the Norwegian Prison System that he'll be incarcerated in.

$1:
Can a prison possibly justify treating its inmates with saunas, sunbeds and deckchairs if that prison has the lowest reoffending rate in Europe? Live reports from Norway on the penal system that runs contrary to all our instincts - but achieves everything we could wish for
