It's about risk acceptance.
You evaluate the risk of NOT shutting down at the outset of the Wuhan Flu pandemic and while it was a hard choice the decision to shut down made medical and economic sense.
Now the risk of REMAINING shut down does not make sense economically and the economic damage is causing political instability.
At least part of the violent response in Minneapolis can be linked to the fact that so many of the rioters and looters have lost their jobs and they feel hopeless and rioting and looting is their way of dealing with it.
I say that not as an excuse but to say that the riots should be seen in perspective with the protests of the past few weeks against the shut downs. People in general are sick of it and the risk of remaining closed now exceeds the risks of opening.
I wrote in the Covid thread about a study done by some Ivy league economists. They pegged the value of a workers lifetime contributions to the economy to be about $9m. They took projections of how many could die, and found the intersection where the number of dead's contributions to the economy, and the cost of the loss of economic output of keeping things closed, to be about 24 months.
That is, if the economy were closed like this for 2 years, it would still be better for the economy than the loss of input from dead people.
So, all due respect to the rioters, but they are only thinking of themselves. Yes it sucks, yes it's hard. But it will be far worse in the long run to open things up too early.
And for Jason Kenney to not consult with Health Authorities in this matter puts MY life at risk.
